Stay safe and healthy abroad

We understand that travel planning can be complex. For all travel health needs, including malaria prevention advice and vaccinations, we encourage you to consult a registered travel health provider.

Under the NHS General Medical Services (GMS) contract, GP practices are required to provide a limited number of travel vaccinations free of charge. These NHS-funded vaccines are offered because they protect against diseases considered to pose the greatest risk to public health if brought back into the UK. The vaccines available on the NHS for travel purposes include:

Polio (administered as part of the combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio vaccine)

Typhoid

Hepatitis A

Cholera

These vaccines can be provided following a pre-travel risk assessment, which is an essential part of safe and effective travel health care.

However, not all travel vaccines are available on the NHS. Vaccines such as rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, yellow fever, and hepatitis B (for travel purposes) are not covered and must be obtained privately.

At present, our practice does not offer private travel vaccinations. This is due to a combination of factors including clinical governance, insurance, and the need for specific training and facilities to safely deliver these services. We recommend that patients requiring non-NHS travel vaccines seek care from a specialist registered private travel clinic, where comprehensive travel health advice and vaccinations are available.
